Typically when people share on Social Media, it’s something mundane like what’s for lunch (that’s me) or the latest Buzzfeed article. This article struck a chord with me and, from what I can tell, many of my friends.
I’m a fan of Dr. Dyer and daily affirmations. I liked these in magazines, I wanted them in newspapers, I like green eggs and ham, I do, I do, Sam I Am. So when I clicked on the link, I was expecting something cheesy but inspiring. Something that I’d smirk at, click and then forget. I didn’t expect to have the words hang around in my thoughts long after the page had been closed.
There is an often-used quote that I kept thinking of when reading this. “What’s right isn’t always popular. What’s popular isn’t always right.”
(who we attribute this to is up for debate, FYI)
That internal compass, that sense of direction, right vs. wrong, and really sticking to your guns were what I kept thinking about. While I’ve seen someone comment that the article described someone independent and wealthy, I honestly felt it could accurately describe me. I’m definitely not independently wealthy. (Wish No. 982726)
One example was when someone took something from level 3 to level 10, name-dropping and trying to bully me into doing something I could not do. I always kept my initial response. My internal playbook helped guide me and give me a strong foundation on which to push back. When the attacks mounted, I stood steadfast.
This quote from Lincoln best describes my frame of mind,
“If I were to try to read, much less answer, all the attacks made on me, this shop might as well be closed for any other business. I do the very best I know how – the very best I can, and I mean to keep doing so until the end. If the end brings me out all right, what is said against me won’t amount to anything. If the end brings me out wrong, ten angels swearing I was right would make no difference.”
I can’t say I’ve got all 10 things down, but I am working on them. Practice makes perfect, and I think each obstacle I overcome confirms that I’m on the right track.
